The Most Rev. Christopher Saunders was educated in Victoria and completed theological studies at St Francis Xavier Seminary in Adelaide. Bishop Saunders spent three years studying philosophy and also holds a degree in Canon Law from St Paul’s Pontifical University in Ottawa, Canada. Bishop Saunders was Chair of the Australian Catholic Social Justice Council from 2003 – 2015.
With a long-running interest and involvement in Aboriginal issues and education, Bishop Saunders has worked in the Kimberley region since the 1970s and was appointed as Administrator of the Broome diocese in 1989.
Only the second Bishop of Broome, Bishop Saunders’ diocese covers 773,000 square kilometres with a population of approximately 33,500 people. He travels enormous distances to minister to and oversee the welfare of the 8,000 Catholics in his care. Bishop Saunders is committed to seeing the Church in the Kimberley make an important contribution to the process of reconciliation between individual and communities. Bishop Saunders is the Bishops delegate for the Australian Catholic Social Justice Council for the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference.
