Bishop Gerard J Holohan was ordained in the Perth Archdiocese and served in that diocese as an assistant parish priest until the Archbishop Foley appointed him to the ministry in Catholic Education. Bishop Holohan completed postgraduate studies in education at Murdoch University in Perth and Fordham University in New York before taking up his role in Catholic Education Western Australia. In 1981 he was appointed Director of Religious Education, a position that served the dioceses of Perth, Geraldton, Bunbury and Broome. Over the years his interest and responsibilities extended to all levels of education, including tertiary education.
He has published the guide, Australian Religious Education - facing the challenges. This seminal document promoted discussions on evangelisation, catechesis and religious education for parishes and Catholic schools as described by the General Directory for Catechesis. The document was written on behalf of the National Catholic Education Commission.
He has served on both state and national education bodies, including the National Catholic Education Commission, Catholic Education Commission and the Catholic Institute Council of Western Australia. He is a Governor of the University of Notre Dame Australia and currently the Chair of the Catholic Education Commission of Western Australia.
